Summary

Frances Adams always said she’d be murdered. She was right.

It’s 1965 and teenage Frances Adams is at an English country fair with her two best friends. But Frances’s life takes a hairpin turn when a fortune-teller makes a bone-chilling prediction: One day, Frances will be murdered. Frances spends a lifetime trying to solve a crime that hasn’t happened yet, compiling dirt on every person who crosses her path in an effort to prevent her own demise. For decades, no one takes Frances seriously. Until that is, nearly sixty years later, when Frances is found murdered.

In the present day, Annie Adams has been summoned to a meeting at the sprawling country estate of her wealthy and reclusive great aunt Frances. But by the time Annie arrives in the quaint English village of Castle Knoll, Frances is already dead. Annie is determined to catch the killer, but thanks to Frances’s lifelong habit of digging up secrets, it seems every endearing and eccentric villager might just have a motive for her murder.

Can Annie safely unravel the dark mystery at the heart of Castle Knoll, or will dredging up the past throw her into the path of a killer? As Annie gets closer to the truth, and closer to the danger, she starts to fear she might inherit her great aunt’s fate instead of her fortune.

Ratings and Info

I like to include the following kind of info in my book reviews because this is the kind of stuff that I personally like to look up when researching a book I’m interested in reading.

⭐️-8/10

Spice Level– maybe 1🔥

There was not much spice in this book, it was closed door. There were a few scenes of kissing and innuendo of more in the writings of Frances’s diary, but romance was not a focus in this book.

Language– a few uses of profanity, not a whole lot

Genre– cozy mystery

Would I read it again/ recommend it?

Absolutely! I thought it was a very interesting read, and a great mystery. I had no idea who the killer was until the end. I liked that it was a mystery without being overly scary. I never had a hard time sleeping at night, from this book.

Author– Kristen Perrin

This is the first book I have read by Kristen Perrin and I will definitely be checking out her future works. She has a sequel to How to Solve Your Own Murder that is titled How To Seal Your Own Fate set to come out in April of 2025. I will definitely be purchasing it to read. Favorite quote of the book: You can play without a plan, but you’ll probably lose.

Overall analysis of the book

I picked this book up on a trip to Books A Million one day not long ago, mostly just wanting to add to my meager book collection. I had looked up a few options beforehand and decided to get How to Solve Your Own Murder and check it out. I’m so glad I did! I was fully invested in the story and in finding out who the killer was, throughout the whole book.

The book was written from Frances’s niece, Annie’s point of view. It follows along in her search for Frances’s murderer, and everything she discovers along the way.

Overall, I think this book was very enjoyable and easy to read. A great choice to add to any book collection for anyone who loves cozy mystery/ murder mystery type books.
