Summary

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Ratings and Info

I like to include the following kind of info in my book reviews because this is the kind of stuff that I personally like to look up when researching a book I’m interested in reading.

⭐️-10/10

Spice Level– maybe 1🔥

There was not much spice in this book, it was definitely closed door. There was one kissing scene, but it went no further than kissing.

Language– I noted a total of less than 5 uses of profanity throughout the whole book. Avery’s friend Max, in the book does use creative replacements for profanity on a few occasions, but they are not actual curse words.

Genre– YA/Mystery

Would I read it again/ recommend it?

Absolutely! I have already read this book twice and I absolutely would read it again. I love this book a lot. I think it has a great plot and is written very well.

Author– Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This was the first book that I read by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I am currently reading through the rest of the Inheritance Games series and love them as well. All of Jennifer’s other book are also on my TBR list. You can check out more about her on her Instagram @authorjenlynnbarnes.

Favorite quote of the book: Everything’s a game, Avery Grambs. The only thing we get to decide in this life is if we play to win.

Overall Analysis of the Book

I ordered the whole series off of Amazon one day after being influenced by seeing it on Pinterest. It was definitely a bold move in my part to buy the whole series before I even read one book, but I don’t regret it at all. This series has come to be one of my favorites, and Jennifer Lynn Barnes has quickly become one of my favorite authors.

Also a side note I’m not being dramatic (okay maybe a little dramatic) when I say that Emily is one of my least favorite characters out of like any book I’ve ever read (you’ll discover why if you read the book). There is also one major plot twist at the end of The Inheritance Games that had me shoook!

This book has a great storyline that is well written, and makes for a very enjoyable read. It does end on a cliffhanger as this book is part of a series, so that’s something to be aware of.

Overall I definitely recommend The Inheritance Games to anyone who enjoys a good YA or Mystery book.
